The mission of the IEF is to support and operate elephant conservation and education
programs in managed facilities and in the wild, with emphasis on management, protection
and scientific research. The African elephant is a threatened species. The highest
projected human population growth in the next 25 years is expected in Sub-Saharan
Africa. Africa will need to increase its supply of food three-fold, turning existing
elephant habitat into cropland, which will increase human-elephant conflict. The
IEF is an umbrella organization supporting conservation and research projects for
elephants throughout the world in their native ranges as well as in captivity. Programs
such as "Effects of Translocation on Behavior and Habitat use in Kenya," "Reducing
Human/Elephant Conflict in Cameroon" and "Social Factors Influence on Ovarian Acyclicity
in Captive African Elephants" are examples of the work carried out by the IEF.

The Greenville Zoo has a long history of exhibiting and managing elephants. A flagship species for the zoo, elephants and their management has evolved over the years as we participate with researchers and conservation organizations to continue to improve the quality of life for our elephants and the scientific information needed for successful long term conservation efforts for elephants and their habitats.
