
Walter and Autumn
Masai Giraffe
Walter and Autumn are Masai giraffe. He was born November 2005 at the San Diego Zoo and she was born January 2006, at the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston. Growing youngsters, both are approximately twelve feet tall with Walter expected to reach about 18 feet and Autumn 16 feet at maturity.

- Giraffes are the tallest mammals in the world
- Humans have 7 bones (vertebrae) in our necks. So do giraffes, however each one can be over 10 inches long.
- Giraffes feet are about 12 inches across, or about the size of a dinner plate.
- Their tail can reach 8 foot in length, including the tuft at the end.
- Giraffe have an unusual gait, or way of walking. The front and back legs on one side move forward together, then the two legs on the other side move forward together. This is called “pacing.”
