Bats: Bat Conservation International

Who: Bat Conservation International
What: Bats of all species (many species vulnerable, threatened or endangered)
Where: Worldwide
Why: The mission of Bat Conservation International (BCI) is to conserve the world's bats and their ecosystems to ensure a healthy planet. BCI is dedicated to the protection of the 1,300+ species of bats and their habitats and creating a world in which bats and humans successfully coexist. BCI works worldwide with local, regional, national and multinational partners to respond rapidly and effectively to bat conservation crises, preventing the extinction of threatened bats and the extirpation of globally significant populations of bats.

Without bats' pollination and seed-dispersing services, local ecosystems could gradually collapse as plants fail to provide food and cover for wildlife species near the base of the food chain. Threats to bats include loss of habitat, guano harvesting, a fungus that causes "white-nose syndrome" and wind turbines.
