Orangutans, who live in the tropical rain forests of Borneo and northern Sumatra, reach about 30 years old in the wild and 50 years old in captivity.

Fun Facts

  • The Greenville Zoo has two Sumatran orangutans; one female, Lana and one male, Kumar.
  • In 2017 Kumar turned 12 years old and Lana turned 32 years old.
  • When orangutans climb, they always have 3 points of contact. 
  • Considered one of the world's 25 most endangered primates, Sumatran oragutans are found only on the island of Sumatra.
