[ARCHIVED] March 11, 2022: Happy Birthday Oscar!

Oscar the Box Turtle

Oscar the box turtle celebrated his 36th birthday at the Greenville Zoo on March 7th. Oscar has been an education ambassador animal since his arrival at the Greenville Zoo in 1994. Box turtles commonly live 25-30 years in the wild but have been known to reach ages of 40-50 years old. There are records of box turtles living more than 100 years but this is rare. We hope Oscar will break the record!

Homeschool ProgramThis month’s Greenville Zoo homeschool theme was ‘Backyard Bugs.’ Although these critters might be creepy and crawly to some, insects and arachnids are some of the coolest animals that live all around us! This class focused on the identification of insects and arachnids. The Greenville Zoo provides monthly homeschool programs for grades K5 - 8th. Check out next month’s theme on our website and sign up by calling 864-467-4850!

The Greenville Zoo partnered with the Center for Interactive Learning Community to participate in their Community of Learning Event. This event was sponsored by CISCO WebEx and connected the Greenville Zoo with 454 audience members around the globe to learn about conservation and the zoo keeping community via our live and interactive distance learning programs.

Register for Zoo Tots ClassesOur family program’s coordinator, Morgan Laskowski, led a group of fledgling bird watchers through the zoo during this month’s Zoo Tots Class. Zoo Tots classes are grown-up and me classes designed to help children explore and engage with the natural world. This month’s theme was the “Ugly Duckling.” Participants crafted binoculars, ran in an egg race and studied nests and eggs.
