Ella the siamang has given birth to a healthy baby on April 6, 2022. Siamangs are arboreal primates naturally found in the Malay Peninsula and Sumatran rain and monsoon forests. These primates are endangered due to illegal pet trade and habitat loss. At age 31, this is likely Ella’s last offspring. She has contributed 4 offspring in her lifetime. Every individual born is vital to the conservation of their species.
This month’s homeschool theme is ‘Mini Naturalist’! Students explored the world through the eyes of a naturalist, learned how to make scientific observations, and how plants and animals work together through project-based learning! Homeschool Programs are $20.00 for members and $25.00 for non-members. These 1.5-hour classes focus on a different theme each month and are available to students k-8th grade. Our family program’s coordinator Morgan Laskowski led a group of growing jolly giants in this month’s Zoo Tots Class on Jack & the Beanstalk! Zoo Tots classes are grown-up and me classes designed to help children explore and engage with the natural world. This month’s students read the classic tale, learned about the parts of a plant, and met an animal that loves to eat plants!
This week, Seneca Middle had an assembly to prime their 6th graders before their field trip to the Greenville Zoo. During this program, zoo educators discussed animal classification, the differences between vertebrates and invertebrates, and the characteristics of the five major vertebrate groups. And of course, they met some of the zoo's most wild ambassador animals up close!
This week students from Clemson’s Wildlife and Fisheries program attended a behind-the-scenes tour for an up-close look at captive animal management. From training behaviors with our orangutans, how to feed an alligator, and the many mysteries of anteaters, students saw a direct comparison of how modern zoos replicate the wild aspects of captive life and provide the highest quality of welfare to our animals.
