Nuru the black and white colobus monkey had her hormonal implant removed on April 7th and is recommended for breeding by the species survival plan. This species is locally threatened in parts of its range. Nuru’s daughter Zuri had her hormone implant readministered and will remain at the Greenville Zoo for one year to develop mothering skills so she can successfully care for future offspring furthering her species’ captive conservation efforts.

This month’s Saturday Safari theme was all about Pollinators! Students of this unique family program learned about botany buddies, the many diverse plants around the world and why those plants are important in our lives. The last Saturday Safari of the Spring season is in May. Check out the latest themes and classes available on the Greenville Zoo website under the education tab!

This week a very special birthday tour with Miles the giraffe occurred. Guests were able to get up close and feed the 18 foot tall giraffe. At this time feeding opportunities are only available via behind the scenes tours. However, the zoo’s next capital project, a giraffe feeding platform, will bring this opportunity to more guests and foster a deeper connection between visitors of the Greenville Zoo and our endangered Masai giraffes.
Kumar the Sumatran orangutan turned 17 years old on April 15, 2022. He celebrated with a decorated enclosure and special enrichment items that encourage natural foraging behaviors provided by orangutan keeper Dee. An orangutan's lifespan is about 35-40 years in the wild, and sometimes into their late 50's in captivity. We look forward to celebrating many birthdays to come with Kumar.
